Why I Don’t Sell My STL Files (and What I Do Offer Instead)

If you’re a fellow maker with a 3D printer at home, first off—hi! You're absolutely my kind of people. I get this question every so often from DIYers and print-savvy gardeners:

“Can I just buy the STL files and print it myself?”

It’s a totally fair question. But the short answer is: I don’t offer my STL files for sale. And I’d love to share why that is, because it’s not about being secretive, controlling, or gatekeeping. It’s about protecting the integrity of my designs, supporting the community, and making sure everyone gets the best gardening experience possible.

🛠️ These Designs Aren’t One-and-Done

Each product I offer goes through multiple design iterations—measuring, modeling, printing, testing, tweaking… then doing that several more times until it’s just right. It’s not unusual for a design to take 6+ rounds of adjustments before it ever makes it to the shop.

Even after launch, I’ll sometimes revisit a product to make small improvements, optimize fit, or fix an edge case. When files are shared freely or resold, those older versions can linger out in the world, causing confusion when they don’t work correctly or don’t fit newer versions of systems. That’s not a great experience for anyone.

🌱 I’m Not Just Printing—I'm Helping Gardens Grow

One of my favorite things about running Freshly Printed Greens is the conversations I get to have with gardeners. I’ve helped troubleshoot root rot, made custom modifications for unique setups, and swapped more growing tips than I can count.

That personal connection matters. When designs are reuploaded, resold, or printed by folks who don’t have the background or passion for hydroponics, it can lead to misinformation—or just a bad product experience. And that reflects on the community and on designs that started right here.

🧑‍💻 But Can’t You Just Trust People?

Most people are kind, honest, and respectful. But once a file is sent out, it’s out of my hands. Even with the best intentions, STL files can end up reposted, pirated, or resold under someone else’s name. I’ve seen it happen, and it's heartbreaking to watch hours (or days) of creative effort get scooped up and reused without permission or credit.

I pour a lot into my designs—not just in time, but in care. Choosing not to distribute files helps me protect that work while still making high-quality, reusable garden gear accessible to anyone, with or without a printer.

💚 What I Do Offer

If you need a custom color, a modified design, or a totally new concept? Message me! I’m more than happy to work with you. And if you’re a fellow printer with a passion for gardening and you’re curious about design, let’s talk shop—I love connecting with other makers.

In the end, my goal is to keep improving, keep sharing, and keep growing (pun very much intended). I’m so grateful for everyone who supports Freshly Printed Greens, whether you’re buying a basket, asking a garden question, helping test new ideas, or just following along to see what’s new.

Thanks for understanding—and happy growing,
🌿 Cc
